Yes its newsletter time your little catch-up with whats going on in the world of The Brothers Streep. This is like when youve bumped into a friend in the shops, and you havent chatted for a while, so they start filling you in on things that youre not particularly interested to hear about, but you dont want to jeopardise your friendship, so you start to find yourself saying things like, No no no, Im not in a hurry, please do tell me more about how last week you discovered a tiny bicycle in your Chicken Cordon Bleu.
Despite massive advances in technology over the past few years, I find it strange that we dont seem to have improved the toaster. Most appliances are fairly effective in carrying out the tasks they were designed for, but the toaster is a bit hit and miss. Its troubling to me that you have to keep an eye on your toast because sometimes its just going to burn for no particularly good reason. I also find it strange that the toaster has settings that no man in their right mind would ever want. If my toast sometimes burns when it is on 4, why on earth would I ever choose 6? Maybe I just have a bad toaster.

Dylan and I had a meeting in town today, so whilst we were in the area we decided to have a quick game of Putt Putt. My levels of co-ordination were at an all time high in the first half of the game, beating Dyl by one in the front nine.

My unprecedented success unbalanced the universe for a bit, and for a while, the very essence of life as we know it began to fall apart. Jamie Oliver began speaking without a lisp, Jacob Zuma vowed to live a life of monogamy, and Oprah Winfrey decided someone else could be on the front cover of O Magazine. Fortunately, in the back nine, I dropped enough shots to be beaten by seven, and the universe was restored to its usual form.

(thanks to Jess, Mon, and whoever else took photos on my camera!)

The Barleycorn Music Club have supported Streep since our first shows as a full band, and we were privileged to play at their annual music festival today, held on the sports field at St Joseph's College. Huge sound system (which resulted in the police being called later), wide open space, food and drink on sale, and a range of musicians performing all day. Some of the crowd literally looked like they were camping. [...]

We were fortunate enough to get a great shout out in the Cape Argus last weekend. Were playing at the Barleycorn Music Festival this Saturday, and Jasper Dick, a spokesman for the event, was very gracious in his promotional interview, stating that hes saved the best for last and that we completely stole the show at last years festival - which is a particularly nice thing to say, especially considering we didnt even play the festival last year.

(thanks to Nikki Streep for photos during the set!)

In calling this show 'The Felicia Mabuza Suttle Tribute' show, we caused some confusion - several people thought Felicia, an ex-talk show host, had passed away, and that we were paying tribute to her. This is understandable, as not many people have tribute shows done for them while they are alive. As far as we're aware, Felicia is still very much alive, but couldn't attend the show for various reasons. Mainly because no one invited her. Shame on us all. [...]

Everyone has skeletons in their closet. Metaphorically of course. People that do actually have skeletons, tend to keep them in the basement. Im basing this observation purely on Norman Bates from Psycho, and not on any real life experience. I dont have a basement.

Anyways, all the members of the Brothers Streep have been involved in various other musical projects which might be viewed by others as skeletons in our past. This however would be an unfair judgement, as we all know the world was a better place when Would You Like Some Curry? was around, and when El Pistolos Streepos Amigos were gigging regularly.

(thanks to Tenille for photos during the set!)

Tonight's show was off the map, in two senses.

In the geographical sense, we were off the map (well, our usual travels anyway) playing at the Bottomup youth cafe in Fish Hoek, the beachfront suburb made famous in recent weeks for a fatal shark attack. Before you ask, yes, we did play our song Sharkman, and it went down very well. Especially well, since against all odds there was a girl there who not only had seen the film Sharkman (upon which the song is based), but actually cheered when we mentioned it. Simon very nearly climbed off the stage to hug her.

In the musical sense, we were off the map with some, ahem, different, versions of our songs, and probably the craziest random banter and stage antics we've ever pulled off on stage. [...]

Of course there are always leftovers in the fridge from Christmas which have no real place being there, but they got hidden behind the margarine and so theyve been enjoying developing mould for the past 3 weeks, proudly raising a rotten army which will eventually inspire you to throw out all the eggs, before you realise its actually that piece of broccoli that your grandfather wouldnt eat because it reminded him of the war. And if Ive learnt anything this Christmas, its that you shouldnt dress up broccoli to look like the secret police.
Merry Christmas everyone! Were all currently enjoying a little holiday break from The Brothers Streep, but we took the time out to record a very special Christmas podcast. Hope you have fun listening to us reminisce about Christmases past, present and future - although, to be honest, we never get around to speaking about Christmas future. Well do that in next years Christmas podcast. [Pause for time based irony joke to sink in...] [...]

We recently had the privilege of hanging out and drinking wine with UK talk show host Graham Norton. For those that aren't familiar with British culture, he is pretty much like the UK's answer to Oprah. But that's obviously only if the question was, "We need someone funnier and slightly less black."
We've got a charity show coming up soon, and in order for this event to be a success, we could do with your help...

We've partnered with our friends K, Ray and the Bird and the Barleycorn Music Club, and are putting on a festive family show on Saturday 19th December at Rygersdal Sport's Club (Erin Rd) in Rondebosch at 8pm. It's only R20 to get in, and all the money is going to charity. (We've still actually got to pick the charity, so if you have any ideas, we're totally open to hear them!)

My sporting career started back in junior school. Im not sure whether cricket or soccer came first, but I know I was better at soccer. I know this because I actually remember playing a couple of soccer matches, whereas I only remember ever playing one cricket match.

I remember two things from the solitary cricket match I played. The first thing is that they cleverly had me up to bat last. I thought it would be funny to walk out with thigh pads on both my thighs, and I assume the opposing team thought it was funny too, because I didnt go out first ball. [...]

Hello Mr Hiccups

It's time to learn more about hiccups. According to Wikipedia, it's pronounced 'h#618;k#652;p', but considering I don't read Russian, I'm not sure how that's meant to help.

Hiccups have only been around since the 1800s. Before hiccups existed, everyone just used to get on with life, uninterrupted by the spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm. The shift from a world without hiccups, to the current hiccupian society we live in today, is seen by many, especially Al Gore, to be the result of Global Yawning.

Christmas is coming. We know this to be true for two reasons - one, because shops have already started proclaiming that the festive season is near, and two, because Christmas beetles are back! This would seem to suggest a special relationship between shops and Christmas beetles - do shops start advertising Christmas when the owner sees the first summer Christmas beetle, or do Christmas beetles sense the potential savings they could be missing, and come back to make the most of festive discounts.
The appendix

One of my friends recently exclaimed that her friend was getting her appendix removed. Because this conversation took place on the Internet, the implied shock was enforced by the letters 'OMW' - which has taken to mean 'Oh My Word', a variation of 'OMS' - 'Oh My Sac' and 'OMG' - 'Oh My Garter'.

The frenzy of excitement that had overtaken my friend seemed somewhat misplaced. If anything, this is what we have come to expect of the appendix. Generally, all an appendix does is waste away inside your body, and sometimes, it explodes. [...]

We have big news! But we can only share this big news later in the week. So perhaps we should warm up with some small news... This weekend Tim P Streep and myself discovered an island, which may or may not have magical powers and a smoke monster.

Okay, I know that might sound like big news in itself, but by island I simply mean a small area of land in a dam in the Hillcrest Wine Estate quarry, and by magical powers I simply mean it had a tree. I'm sure I did see a smoke monster though. [...]

There is an artist living inside every one of us. Not necessarily a very good artist, but an artist none the less.

We begin our artistic careers from an early age. When you're young, your drawings will either get stuck on the fridge to capture the hearts of all who seek out cooled food or drink, or they'll get the child psychologist called in, because apparently drawing a house with no windows means you're not getting enough love. Or at the very least, ventilation. This is definitely not a new observation if you google worst musical instrument, the first result you get will be the bagpipes. Or at least, that should be the first result you get for some reason the first result I got was the acoustic guitar, but Im going to put this down to Google being infected with some sort of virus that would at least explain why the search bar is looking bloated. Ahoy there all you young whipper-snappers out there in computer land! No, there hasnt been a glitch in the Matrix, and yes this post has been written by a Mr. Fylan Streep.

Fylan Streep? I dont remember a Fylan in the ever-increasing-band-members-band commonly-known-as-the-Brothers-Streep? I hear you ask. Yes. Fylan Streep. To the max. Im the one who is less interested in guitar, but more interested in blog posts. In these posts I will attempt to provide you with journeys into the mind of a Streep band member. And this is my first... [...]

Im currently busy listening to music (Jive Bunny And The Mastermixers The Album, to be precise) and writing this blog because I have time to kill. I have time to kill because Im copying a folder from my computer to my portable hard drive, and for some reason, my computer decided that this process was going to take 10 hours. Although, to be fair, its sitting on 3 hours now, and it definitely didnt take me 7 hours to write the first two paragraphs. Or at least I hope not, because then I think I need to give up the idea of ever writing a book.

Ive had Jackson 5s I Want You Back stuck in my head for the last three days. Its quite a pleasant song to get stuck in your head. Most songs get annoying, but this song has been good to me I even made it my ringtone if you phone me, and I take a while to answer now you know why.

I think the song would make quite a good Brothers Streep cover, but Im unsure of how easy it would be to sell this idea to the rest of the band. Dyl and I had a hard time convincing the two Tims that covering a song from the Rocky Horror Picture Show was the way to go. At this point, our Rocky Horror tribute show is far from happening.
For a long period of time, Steri Stumpies have been part of the Brothers Streep way of life. Tim S. Streep has been known to buy rounds of Steri-Stumpies for the band at band practice, and when there are bets to be made, Steri Stumpies are usually used as betting leverage. For example, if Joshua Doore turns out to be a real person, I owe Tim P Streep a chocolate Steri Stumpie.
After my last post, I was constantly refreshing my email. With each click I expected a flood of mails, each one with the same general request: "Richard, please, tell us more about your facial hair, never before has such an interesting topic been broached ." So needless to say, I was shocked to find an empty mailbox, not one single mail. However, I have subsequently done some thorough research (spoken to Hugh) and apparently it is highly likely that the internet was broken. So to honour all those phantom messages lost to cyberspace, here is a story.

I dont believe time travel exists. I base that on the fact that if time travel existed, someone would have come back to this time period and let us know. Other people do believe in time travel, mainly because of that white cat from Early Edition and the fact that Nataniël looks like he comes from the future.
6:25pm, Monday night. There I was, standing in Spar Tops - the 'classy' bottle store - picking up a few Hunters Dry for our Streep braai and band practice, when suddenly my phone rang. Trying to answer your phone while holding a pack of lamb chops, your wallet, your bank card, and a six pack of glass bottles involves defying the laws of gravity and limbs per average human somewhat, but I managed to get to it in time. Although there was that time at Canal Walk where I and a bunch of my friends were wearing suits, and there were these cars on display in that stage area by the food court. We started pretending we were car salesmen, and proceeded to show people around the display, eventually inviting them to get into the cars themselves. As soon as an unaware shopper got inside the car, another one of us would walk up to the car, kindly ask them to get out, and then shout at the other person for letting them get inside in the first place.

"Who the heck is Michael Bay?" you ask.

And I answer, "He's the director of Transformers 2". He's also something of a target for ridicule and parody as a result of his obsession with destruction on an epic scale and generally blowing up 90% of the movie set in the course of any scene. When people start referring to you as a stunt-coordinator instead of a director, you know you've gotten carried away with the action element of your films. [...]

Hey there

This week is a birthday week for the Brothers it was my birthday last Saturday, and coming up weve got Dylans birthday on Friday, and Richards on Saturday. So yes, if you see us this week, we expect presents. In fact, its probably best you carry presents on you at all times just in case you bump into us.

On Saturday were heading slightly north to play a show at Ellingtons Saloon in Belville. The show starts at 8pm, costs R20 and will see us sharing the stage with Lyderkane, Captain and The Caveman and Jameson Raid. [...]

Beards and beanies was a success! Thanks to all those who came to Fogeys to spend the evening with us. We really do need to single out Andrew Maunder of Gravity Wins Again his beard was colossal. Apparently its gaining quite the following. Rumours are that many people from all around the world visit Andrew just to ask the beard questions. The beard has yet to actually develop an effective method of communication, but the Daily Voice has confirmed that when the Pope dies, Andrews beard has been elected to choose the new one. Saturday was an EPIC day for Streep. The morning rehearsal at Simon's place was the usual mixture of musical energy and comic moments, the perfect preparation for what was to be a successful show that night. In spite of having to do our own sound, the setup at the venue was almost completely hassle free, everything just worked correctly first time round. The restaurant gave us a pretty decent dinner of our choice, completely free of charge. By the time we started playing there were over 70 people in the crowd, a really decent turnout for our live shows so far. So, if youre a man, you need to grow a beard, and make sure you have a beanie to don for the occasion. If youre a woman, you have to do whatever the female equivalent is. Im not entirely sure what that would be maybe wear a hairnet? Im not sure ladies, do whatever you feel led to do.
Last night we played with Julia Jakobsen at the Durbanville Kunskafee in the northern suburbs. In retrospect, I think it should be renamed the Durbanville Gothkafee to keep it's branding more in line with the decor and general clientele.

It was a really interesting place, but half the time I felt like I was on the set of Blade 3. I kept expecting Wesley Snipes to jump out brandishing a sword. Just name the hardcore metal band - their posters were up on the walls. Candlemass, Cradle Of Filth, Rammstein, pretty much everything your mom would freak out at, if you put it on the wall of your room. There was also a small but well-stocked CD store inside the place. As if that wasn't innovative enough, someone was running a small hair salon inside as well, where you could pick any cut, style, and shade of punk or metal hair your heart desired.
Last week I had the flu. In fact, almost everybody I know had the flu last week. It would have probably been everyone if Tim P. Streep and I had acted on our plan of fusing our strains of flu together to concoct the ultimate virus. Fortunately for the general population of earth, we didnt, and decided to play Hot Shots Golf instead.

(Actually the world would be a better place if others shared our apathy. We could invade Poland, but... its perfect weather for a game of Monopoly. No Goebbels, Im the hat....)

The problem with me, is that I have a fairly good immune system, so Im seldom properly sick. When I am sick, I tend to sit somewhere on the cusp of being well, and not well which then means Im sick for longer, because I dont feel sick enough to pull out of the Comrades I was planning to run, or the Die Hard Quadrilogy I was planning on miming.

As I sit here on a Monday morning, sipping terrible but functional coffee from the Wild Bean Cafe, I reflect on the last 36 hours, and just how much music I've played, none of it with my beloved brothers in Streep. Saturday night I played in an orchestra, Sunday morning I led the singing from the piano at a 10am church service, Sunday afternoon I played in the orchestra again, and then rushed off to play bass with a band for a 7pm church service. I'm happy but exhausted this morning.

Yes, I played in an orchestra - not the violin, not the bassoon, not the French horn, not even the mighty tuba - I played steel-string guitar. As sacrilegious as a hardened classical musician might find this, it was really fun. So many of the stereotypical ideas I had about an orchestra were broken. [...]

Having not seen each other for the whole of this week, we looked back on the website launch, reminiscing about life before the band came down with the black plague you know, the good old days, when spacecases took up all the space in your bag, and board games were based purely on your ability to throw dice.

It wasnt the fact that he likes to deliver his diagnoses through an evil looking ventriloquists doll (hes actually quite talented) so much as all the bad press flu has been getting in the media lately, that left me feeling a bit unsettled.
Slightly bigger than a goldfish

Ive stumbled upon a rule. The animal kingdom only cares about animals which are slightly bigger than a goldfish.

Today I began searching for an answer to a question that had been troubling me since last night. At our website launch I made some comment about beached whales, and no-one laughed. To be fair, it wasnt particularly funny, but its not just that they didnt laugh the whole venue fell completely silent. It was as if I had resurrected Hitler.
