Starfish

[ Posted 19 February 2010 in Life by Simon Streep ]

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a small boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the child, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The boy replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.  The surf is up and the tide is going out.  If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realise there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?  You can’t make a difference!”

The boy realised the man was right, stopped wasting his time, and went home.

I confess I've, um, never heard that one before. Being a tide pool and rock jetty climbing enthusiast, I've found my share of deceased starfish. Poor things who died from causes other than not being fully immersed in water. They don't need to be while it's low tide. I found a special place at the end of a particular jetty during a very very low tide - a colony of them. I've never seen starfish so big; huge thick arms and brilliant colors intertwined around each other. Still biding my time til that minus low tide comes again so I can visit.
