What Makes Someone A Stroupie?

[ Posted 13 September 2009 in Streep by Tim S. Streep ]

After our show yesterday at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre, someone told me that they wanted to become a Streep groupie. This isn't the first time that has happened, and it got me thinking: what exactly IS a groupie? I mean, I've heard the term, and I've probably used it in conversation, but I'm not 100% sure of its definition. As I understood things, a groupie was something like the evolution of a regular fan, someone who not only loved the shows and music, but also hung around with the band as well. Someone who was closer to the band than others.

Then I read this on Wikipedia. Right. So a groupie IS closer to the band, just not in the way I thought. Having already been propositioned by a very drunk girl at a previous gig, I think I'm gonna pass on having that sort of groupie. Instead, I propose something along the lines of that first paragraph, and to avoid bringing several good Streep friends into disrepute, I'm suggesting we call them 'Stroupies'.

Which begs the question in this post title...

Comment your ideas. Brothers of Streep, friends, fans, colleagues, lend me your ears: I ask you, what makes someone a Stroupie?

Let's hear it...

I seem to be losing my voice before the last song, which is sort of frustrating, because you generally require a voice to sing. So, my suggestion... maybe a Stroupie is someone who can sense my predicment, and runs onto stage, and takes over for the last song? I can just stand away from the mic and lip sync. Could work...

A few ideas based on past experience: anyone who has played Buzz with the band, anyone who came all the way to the Kunskafee show, all the crowd vocalists on the early albums (CombiJa, etc.). And anyone who brings food to a Streep Band Practice - that's almost qualification for joining the band.

Haha... alhough, alas, I have to sort of correct you - the crowd vocals on CombiJa etc were just Dylan and I, and we're already in the band, so I don't think we'd be allowed to be Stroupies. However, this new word of yours does seem to lend itself to a certain someone we know, changing their name to Mostreep Mouisstroupie.

Why, I never thought of that. But now that you mention it...

I just want to say that it bothers me that groupies are generally equated with sexual relations and psycho characters like Mel from Flight of the Conchords (which reminds me I should finish that Photoshop project where I combine Simon's and Dylan's faces to show what their children will look like ..) True Stroupies are the friends that go to most gigs, can recognise songs "met 2 note asseblief", have played Buzz at Simon's house, and *cough* get podcast mentions. Proudly a Stroupie!

Is a Chasing Friday groupie, a Froupie? Or is a froupie, a fake groupie?
