Dear Anna Paquin, Part Two

[ Posted 12 October 2009 in Streep by Simon Streep ]

Dear Anna Paquin (another open letter)

Hello.  We have reason to believe that you’ve finally heard the song we wrote about you.  Unless that was an incredibly good Anna Paquin impersonator on the Graham Norton Show, one of our life’s goals is complete, and with any luck, you’ve loaded our Anna Paquin song onto your I-pod and are playing it to all your friends and pet geese.

As it was BBC 1’s The Graham Norton Show and not BBC 1’s The Brothers Streep Show, we obviously didn’t get any time to talk to you on the show itself – judging by your reactions, there are two things we need to chat about...

Firstly, we are fans, and we do think you’re beautiful – so there will be no need to get your shrink to bill Graham Norton.  You really don’t need to develop a complex – as we tried to explain in our first letter to you, the face scrunching is caused by Anna Paquin Syndrome (APS) - an anomaly which only happens when a movie or TV programme with you in it is paused.  Unless someone develops a remote control that can be used to freeze people in real life, or you foolishly befriend Hiro Nakamura from Heroes, you’ll be fine.   Having said all that, if you do end up in therapy, we’re grateful you said you will be billing Graham Norton instead of us.

Secondly, thank you for giving us creative input by subtly suggesting we should change the lyrics of the bridge from ‘you finally see everything as she goes to fourth base’, to ‘you finally see everything as she goes to fifth base’.  This has sparked a debate amongst the band that perhaps different cultures use a different ‘base’ system.  You see, in South Africa, if you went to fifth base, it would either mean you’ve set up your game of baseball incorrectly, or it would mean you’ve simply just run through home base and back to first base, which besides being a terrible move in the game, would also surely mean you’re just back at kissing?  Either way, in that scene we were talking about, you were definitely not just kissing, so before we re-record the lyrics, we’d appreciate it if you e-mailed us and explained your logic.

Once again, thank you very much for your time Anna Paquin, we look forward to hearing from you soon - apparently we both use Skype – who knew we had so much in common?

Miss Paquin, you have been an awfully good sport, and we feel honoured that you enjoyed the song.

Yours sincerely
The Brothers Streep
(Dylan, Richard, Simon, Tim P and Tim S)

P.S. We apologise for not including more compliments in the song, but to be fair, when we wrote it, we had NO idea you’d actually end up hearing it.

I predict a life long friendship between the Brothers Streep and Anna Paquin after this.

I hope we'll get to share the screen with her again. The new bridge we had originally written for the show went: "And now Anna's on the Graham Norton Show, listening to a song we wrote years ago, we hope she'll like it and tears will flood, and she'll give us a cameo in True Blood."

Every time the video paused whilst I was downloading it, her face was all scrunched up. Funny, that ...

5th base is about the blood sucking on the show ... After home, if your with a vampire, he takes your blood next. About the song ... She is shy, but you could tell she was flattered. Just contact HBO, Alan Ball, People, TMZ.com, even MTV ... HBO might even sponsor a single release if it helps her show! HBO could even own a recording outfit ... who knows? Also. get as many people to view it on you tube as possible ... that way, it gets top placement and is very seen ... more career opportunities for you!

Just watched Graham Norton because of Anna & then heard you guys & I thought you rock!! I then watched it all over again on the BBC iPlayer - I just wished I'd recorded it. Looking at Anna's reaction, I think she was embarrassed - but in a good way - it was one of those OMG what are they saying? What are they going to say? And then... relief. You weren't trying to belittle or upset her, just found amusement in things she'd done. And I for one think she genuinely found it flattering and amusing. BTW - Fourth base is normally defined as 'normal' heterosexual intercourse - Graham will never get to fourth base, he'll skip straight from third to fifth base!!. Fifth base usually refers to the type of sex that is normally frowned upon by most women!! So unless I missed something in True Blood - Anna made a mistake!

Hey guys, thanks so much for all the support! Still no further word from Anna, but Christine and Doive have some interesting, yet opposing insight, into the whole base issue. We're glad so many people have understood where we're coming from, and that we are not trying to insult the lovely lady. I've got a feeling that some of the diehard True Blood fans that think we insulted Anna could get violent, so we might need to grow our Streep army a bit, or at least call a truce. Where is Barack Obama when you need him! :)

Just wanted to say caught you guys on TGNS. How great is your song. Playing over and over. Anna's face was a picture. I hope you get to meet her eventually. Maybe she could play in the band. MAYBE she's writing a tribute song to you guys. Thank you for putting something great out into the Universe. All the best that your increased fame will bring. Oh and if the good lady says fifth base, it's fifth base ;)

I think Rich (uk) has a point. Anna said 5th base. Maybe it should be 5th base.

Was thinking today that if you guys came over to the UK, the best place to show off your talents to the comedy circuit would be at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.

I'd come and see you there as I'm sure many others would too.

WELL DONE GUYS!!!!

Still have to say the Steri Stumpie song sticks in my head. Think i have the lyrics memorized. Played it all the way to Rocking the Dasie's.

Would really love to see a cameo of this song in True Blood. Anna is beautiful, didn't notice the face scrunch until now.

You should watch Trick R Treat, she is a wear wolf in that one.

SUPER impressed with you guys. :]

You have been added to a popular american TV news website today!

Congrats ... I will try to get you on others too!

16 October 2009
Christine - thanks so much! We really appreciate it - the more people who see the video, the better!

Dominique - awww, imagine how sweet a cameo would be - (hint hint producers at True Blood) - also, if you played the Steri Stumpie Song all the way to Daisies, how long did it take till your ears started to bleed? I don't think even I could take that much of the song - and I was involved in writing it!

Rich (UK) - I think we might just try apply to the Fringe - might as well give it a stab!

Oh and Kate, if 5th base is getting bitten by a vampire, we now have to establish when Anna got bitten by a vampire... was it in that scene?

As one of the diehard True Blood fans I can tell you that I think your song was awesome! The show is just now airing over here (USA) this evening and it is freaking hilarious. Anna Paquin looked like she appreciated it, too.

I posted the link to your song on the True Blood wiki.

I just watched the GNS here in the United States. I don't get all the negative comments. The song is very cute. Anna was just trying to concentrate on listening to the song - I don't think she was insulted at all. I bet she has downloaded it and replayed it hundreds of times in the past week.

What a delight to find your's and Anna's appearance on a YouTube video after a chance remark at Twitter! I thought it was most out-there, but least stalkerish fan appreciation ever and so sweet. I think she really appreciated it.

I'm also floored by your last name. Are you a fan of Meryl Streep as well? I think she would get a huge kick out of your band writing a song about her. Way to go, guys. I'll be following your career with great interest.

I'm a big fan of Anna and discovered this video searching for videos about her. I must say you guys are geniuses! This song is f*ing brilliant.
I suppose that Anna would have preferred a more flattering song but, hey!, not everyone gets a song about them (even if they are famous) so she shouldn't be too picky about it.
Best regards to you from a new fan (Damn!, I can't get this song out of my head!)

You guys are great! Just watched the GNS for the 4th time since 09 & am spending yet another day with your song stuck in my head! Very creative and I'm wondering what has happened since then. Are you guys still playing? Yes, I didn't visit wikipedia before posting this, I'm comfortable admitting it! I'd also like to say if you ever fund yourself in the Tampa Bay region of Florida, USA, I'd love to meet you guys! I'd be happy to show you all the hidden gems of the area! Take care & best of luck (goodness knows you all have the skills!) ~Amanda
